Michael holds leading roles in several professional organisations. He is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CTA, Fellow) and a Fellow of The Institute of Indirect Taxation (FIIT), of which he is also the President. He was Deputy Chairman (1993-95)
and then National Chairman of The VAT Practitioners Group (1995-97) and has been its President since 1997. He is a member of the Revenue Bar Association, the Commercial Bar Association, the Chancery Bar Association and the Bar European Group. He is a Fellow of The Society of Advanced Legal Studies, a Fellow of The Institute of Continuing Professional Development and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts. He has a number of interests in the City of London, of which he is a Freeman, and is a Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers, and of The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.
